Chimney starter / newspaper is the way I start my lump / hardwood coal. I agree with John, no chemical smell or taste

chimney starter with newspaper is the easiest and most cost effective method. as a bonus you are not introducing lighter fluid smell and taste to your bbq'd foods.

There are electric starters, chimney starters, and I have heard tales of people doing a variety of things to include using liquid hydrogen (on the net there is a guy who is a NASA type engineer using liquid hydrogen, falls under "don't try this at home").

Weber Chimney starter is the best, I would highly recommend it as it gives you a great base to start grilling on and is quicker than lighter fluid. To start a pile of coals or a Chimney Starter, try Weber Fire Starters, I use them in my smoker for lump charcoal and you light it and stack a bunch of coals around it and it lights up really nicely as well.

I usually use the charcoal chimney/newspaper method too. You can use a propane torch. If it is a lot of charcoal, then you can use one of those brush burner propane torches.

Buy a Chimney and put your coals in it and crumble up two sheets of newspaper and put in bottom for the fuel and in about 20-30 minutes coals are ready to dump into your grill...
