Hey Fella's

Got to pull out the Okie Joe a couple day's ago and cooked up some mighty good Chicken and a few burgers, must say they turned out really well. Had to work past a few things but nothin' big. I have a big event coming up a bit later and that will be the big test. Hope it all goes well, and I have been reading all of your comments which are a big help, Thanks!!

Thinkin' about doing up some ribs and and steaks and maybe some sockeye for Dads Day.

Thanks again!! Happy Fathers Day to all of you.

hey guys, I havent been here in a while either.  Keeley is right about the older models, when they were still making them in Oklahoma.  Mine is 15 years old now and still cooks great.

dang, I just now saw your picture of your rig. Holy whole hog, that is an awesome unit. A thousand bucks, you should be ashamed. That's robbery!!!! lol

Great find

you definitely got a winner there Craig. The original ones were built to last.

If you're interested in a really well done book on smoking, recipes, etc, I'll absolutely recommend "Smoke and Spice". Google that if you want. I got mine at a Bass Pro shop but Amazon or other e tailers sell it. Sauces, mops, rubs, etc but the side dish recipes are amazing too. It's been my favorite book of any I've messed with. Some reviews are negative but many are very positive. I use it quite a bit and think it's a great resource.

wow, a little life back in the group! I have to admit I haven't been here in quite awhile.

Hope everyone's not baking in this heat.

Bill, congrats on your trailer unit. If you bought an old school Okie Joe unit, it's a nice one for sure.

Dave and I both have dealt with the Academy Sports Oklahoma Joe version smokers. Though labeled with the Okie Joe plate, they've been manufactured after the New Braufels deal, so quality got lost in the process. I too fought my unit everytime I used it trying to maintain temps. I since sold it.

Moved on to a unit built in Houston. Very heavy duty and a pleasure to grill/smoke with. Easy holding temps all day long but at 1,100 lbs, it stays put.

Wife has family coming up this weekend. I'll be smoking a couple briskets, ribs, sausages, etc tomorrow. Can't wait to eat!!!

Mine is one like is sold at Academy for around $450.  It was a gift from my aunt.  It leaks like a sieve around the door junctions.  It is a hot, difficult job to be fiddling with the dampers and fire all day long mid summer.  So, I definitely would not buy another on of these.  But, I shouldn't complain too much as it was a free, gift.  Also, it can double as a very large charcoal grill.  So, it is a decent unit but just a pain for long smoking periods like when doing either a brisket or pork butt.  I'm still saving up for a Big Green Egg or similar unit for these type jobs.

You mention that you got a commercial unit which may have been built better than the models like they sell at Academy.

Guemes Bill,

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed in my Ok Joes Grill.  I've commented about this below. It is not very efficient even though it seems pretty heavy duty.  It requires a lot of attention if you are planning to smoke something like a brisket or pork butt.  The one I have was given to me as a gift and it's big and heavy and you can cook lots of stuff on it. But, like I said, you'll spend a lot of time trying to regulate the temperature/fire.  This gets real old if you're doing a brisket for 9 hours.  I'm saving up for a Big Green Egg which uses way less fuel and you can actually maintain an even low and slow temperature for hours and hours without any adjustments of the dampers.  The ceramics are tops at heat retention, controlability.  But, they are tops in cost too which is why I don't have one!

Happy Grilling!

Dave
