Q please, are we talking about smoking in a box type smoker or on a grill or just cooking with the smoke??..using the box smoker I have not had a problem with the wind...using the grill...yep, reason is they mostly aint tight and the outside air gets in to easy..and it depends on wether you are cold smoking or hot smoking. when it's real windy I just move the smoker so that it's back is to the wind and put deflectors on either side so the wind doesn't hit the vents straight on..I've used every thing fron sheet metal to lawn furnature to cardboard to build these...I once moved the smoker to under the deck and hung tarps (weighted at the bottom with cinder blocks) to block the wind...that worked kinda good but the deck smelled like smoke for a couple of days after... : )
