Stick brats in just enough boiling water so they are coverd. Add 1 bottle of beer! For best flavor use a ale or lager like Sam Addams. I use Dos Perros but its hard to find outside of TN. boil for about 30 min then toss on grill and brown them as you see fit.

WHY kill the the taste of good beer by watering it down? USE STRAIGHT BEER. But if you do, be very careful... I have seen this happen with my own eyes... when you plop Wisconsin Brats into boiling hot Sam Adams... those brats will jump right out of the pot! Use a brand of beer the brats like; Miller Genuine Draft, Leinenkugles, Spotted Cow or any other native Wisconsin beer... not that stuff from across the border (Wisconsin border that is). GO BADGERS!

Also, cut up 3 large onions, add 1/2 teaspoon paprika and garlic powder plus a few dashes of hot sauce and 1/2 stick of butter and a few more dashes of Worcestershire to the beer before adding the brats... AND NOW YOU REALLY HAVE SOMETHIN" to SHOUT ABOUT!
Well to be honest I havent considered trying it without the water. That recipe is stadium style. But as for my choice of beer. its an American beer brewed right here in Nashville TN.

It just means two dogs.
I concur...boil the brats in straight beer, but I think 30 min might be a little long. They tend to be a little overcooked if they are boiled to long. As far as the brand of beer, dark beer is better than light. I'll try the extra ingrediants next time.
Ive found boiling first gives you a juicier brat. I do polish sausage the same way but that gets pan seared not grilled.
I'm a transplanted Badger living in Happy Valley and am locally known as BratMan! I make about 500 brats for a charity golf tournament here on a tow behind grill a buddy and I own. WHY ARE YOU BOILING BRATS! ... My recipe - grill them first until they are solid and all the fat is out .... even charred is good ... then simmer ... NOT BOIL ... in beer (if outside) or one part beer & one part water (if inside- so your house doesn't smell like stale beer for the next week) ,onions or garlic, Lawrys Salt, butter and beef broth for 30 to 40 minitues ... the brats will rehydrate in the broth and the onions carmalize ... the longer they simmer ... the better they taste ... enjoy ...
